POPULAR FOOD THAT COULD CAUSE ALLERGY

Food allergy refers to exaggerated immune responses in allergic individuals due to reaction of immune system to certain foods. It is caused when the immune system of allergic individuals mistakes a harmless food protein as an allergen and attempts to fight against them by producing antibodies (specifically immunoglobulin E or IgE) in the system. The IGE in turn releases some chemical mediators including histamine, which are the reason for triggering symptoms of allergy reaction.

COMMON ALLERGENIC FOODS

The popular foods that cause allergic reactions are:

Peanut: One of the most common food allergies is peanut allergy, which can even cause severe life threatening condition including anaphylaxis. Even trace amount of peanuts in food or any casual contact with them can cause allergic reaction. The allergies are usually life-long.

Tree nuts: Allergy to tree nuts is life-long too and may cause anaphylaxis in sensitive people in rare cases. Common nuts that may cause allergy include:

  • Cashew nuts
  • Pine nuts
  • Pecans
  • Hazelnuts
  • Walnuts
  • Almonds
  • Brazil nuts
  • Macadamia nuts.

Milk: Allergy to milk is more common in babies, particularly in them with atopic dermatitis. Allergy is caused when immune system reacts to milk protein e.g. casein and whey. Symptoms for the allergy are often mild and include:

  • Rashes
  • Stomach cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Skin hives
  • In rare cases, anaphylaxis

Egg: Egg allergy is usually caused by three egg proteins namely conalbumin, ovomucoid and ovalbumin present in egg white.

Wheat: The allergy is particularly common in babies. A wheat protein called gliadin is responsible for the allergic reaction. People with allergy to wheat are recommended to have gluten free diet to avoid the allergic reactions.

Soy: Soyabin allergy is another common food allergy usually seen in children. Soya is present in many food products for example- processed meats, seasoned foods, breakfast cereals, bakery goods, ice cream, margarine, sweets and drinks, and allergic reaction to soya shows the following symptoms-

  • Breathing difficulties
  • Abdominal cramp
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rash
  • Vomiting

Fish: Adults are more likely to have fish allergy. Most common types of finned fish to which individuals are allergic include:

  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Hake
  • Halibut
  • Cod
  • Tuna

Shellfish: Shellfish may create severe allergic reactions in allergic individuals. Some suchlike shellfish include:

  • Clams
  • Mussels
  • Oysters
  • Crab
  • Prawns
  • Shrimps
  • Lobster
  • Crayfish
  • Scallops
